I can't believe we are well into June! May went by so fast! Tomorrow the boys will be one month and that blows my mind. So let me fill you in on the past month...
On May 4th, I had my last doctors appointment. I was dilated to a 2 and just starting to efface. Both boys had turned head down and the doctors thought it would be soon. The next few days were torture. I was pretty miserable. Finally on May 7th, the cramping and back pain just did not let up. That night I stayed awake waiting and waiting for it to go away. (I had had pretty bad back pain before and it would go away after a few hours) Around 3 in the morning after absolutely no relief I woke Ryan up. We couldn't really time "contractions" well because it was just an overall back labor pain. He was so patient with me though. He slowly started getting ready even though I told him over and over I was not in labor. We popped in a movie and attempted to watch to distract me. It was a nice thought at least. Around 5:30 I finally let Ryan convince me to go to the hospital. I was in complete denial and didn't want to be sent away. But I didn't want to show up too close to their shift change (am I a nurse or what!?) so we went. They got me in a room and found both of the babies on the monitor pretty quickly. She finally checked me and we were all shocked when she said I was a 6! She said "Happy Mothers Day! You are having these babies today!" The doctor was notified and they ordered an ultrasound to check the position. However, Twin B had flipped again. Once they found that out, the madness began. The doctor was there by this time and said they were doing a c-section and doing it now! He kicked the ultrasound tech out and a crowd of people descended on me. They rushed me into the OR faster than I could blink. The only thought I could process was "Breath Jamie!" I won't lie, it was easily one of the scariest moments of my life, but I was so relieved when Ryan showed up beside me. We had been prepared for the idea of having a c-section, but I think it was just the speed of things happening so fast that was overwhelming. The doctors were just standing there waiting for me to go numb. They would prick me every so often and ask if I could feel that. I knew they were in a hurry and I had to decide how much I could tolerate. SCARY!!! Finally, I gave the ok and Braden was born at 7:33 am. He weighed 6 lbs 10 oz and was 19 in long. Of course, the cry brought tears to my eyes. Kegan was born at 7:35 and weighed 5 lbs 7 oz. He was 18 in long. There were only 2 minutes between them, but it felt much longer. The "pressure" was quite intense!
I remember Kegan being born, but the next couple hours after that were a blurr. I was quite out of it. Braden was having blood sugar issues, but I was able to see him a few hours later once I was in my room. Kegan was having a few more problems. He was put in the special care nursery. By the time I was able to see him that evening he was hooked up to all sorts of stuff and it just broke my heart.
To make a long story short he was sick, and I ended up getting really sick. They decided to culture the placentas and my blood. Kegan's placenta and my blood grew some nasty bacteria. Braden was fine though which still blows my mind. They suspect the infection is what sent me into labor and obviously what caused Kegan to be so much smaller and sicker. We both ended up on some strong antibiotics. Braden and I were finally able to break out of the hospital, but Kegan wasn't so lucky. I had absolutely no idea how hard it would be to leave a baby at the hospital. After many frustrating days and emotional breakdowns Kegan finally got to come home on the 28th. We are all doing good now. It is actually much easier to have them both home rather than going to the hospital multiple times a day! They are such good babies. It is hard for sure, but so much fun. Now enough of me blabbing, here are some pictures...
